Halifax > bursary fund
Created in winter 2000 as a way to give something back to the community that supports Venus Envy, the Bursary Fund aims to support women in need who wish to further their education. In our first year we awarded bursaries totaling $2100 to three women, in each year from 2001 to 2003 we awarded two $1000 bursaries, and in 2004 we awarded one (our second recipient was unreachable, and so the money has been returned to the pot for another year). In 2005 we awarded three $1000 bursaries.
We raise money through dances, concerts and other local events, sales of pins at the store, donations from store proceeds (see "news" below), and private donations. The Venus Envy Bursary Society is currently registered as a charitable society (which means that we donate all the money we raise), but unfortunately we are not yet able to issue receipts for taxation purposes.
news
We donated two $1000 bursaries in 2006. We also recieved $1500 from the Burlesque society and $100 from Girl-ish productions. Thanks to all!
In 2005, the Bursary Society had another great year. Donations from the Women's Dance and the Halifax Burlesque Society were even more generous than last year! We raised over $1000 during Bursary Mondays in the store and another few hundred through the sale of pride pins. It was such a successful year that we were able to donate three $1000 bursaries this year for the first time. Again we had many deserving applicants and the decision is always a difficult one.
We are always impressed by the diversity of the applicants and the interesting things they are studying and what their plans are for the future. It's exciting each year to open the envelopes and find out a little bit about all these women's lives. Sometimes the stories are sad and painful to read but always told with a strength and a hopefulness that makes us wish we had more money to give to more women! Over the next few months you will start to see some of these women's stories on this page so you can get a better idea of who we've helped out
If you would like to help us help women studying in Nova Scotia you can do so by sending us a cheque (see address below), save up your Venue Envy purchases for the first Mondya of each month, tell your friends and family to check out this page, hold a small fundraising party at home, or heck, we'd love it if you wrote us into your will!
Our next challenge will be to become a registered charity. We'll let you know when that process is complete.
how to apply
The Venus Envy Bursary fund will be made available to any woman who has been accepted into any program in Nova Scotia which issues a degree, certificate, or diploma. The application contains questions about the applicant's financial need, experience, and proposed program of study.
The application form is here. It is a PDF (Adobe Acrobat) file that can be filled out on your computer or printed out and filled in by hand.
You may also pick up an application form at women's centres, universities, community colleges, and social services agencies around Nova Scotia. They are available at Venus Envy Halifax, and you are welcome to contact us by phone (902 422-0004) or by email () to request an application.
The successful applicants will be chosen by a selection committee of 3-5 women who will consider primarily the applicant's need, with secondary consideration given to her commitment to the women's community, and to her perceived ability to complete the year.
how to help
Donations are most welcome! We would like to give bursaries to a greater number of women each year; the more money we can raise, the more women will benefit from the fund. Venus Envy Halifax donates 5% of sales on the first Monday of every month. So come in to the store, buy a pin, make a donation, or sponsor an event in support of the fund! We welcome any and all suggestions from the women's community in general. Please feel free to contact us with your ideas.
