Definitely has its uses
I don't use sponges during most of my period -- it's true that they need to be rinsed fairly frequently on heavy days, and I actually find washing them at work a pain in the butt! However, these bad boys go one place my good old Diva Cup doesn't, and that is during sex. (Well, sometimes my Diva Cup goes during sex, but the result can be messy and sometimes noticeable!) Pop a sea sponge in before you go on a date and you can forget about it until you go to pee after sex, and then rinse it out and forget about it again til the next morning. Unless your date is fisting you, s/he is unlikely to even notice a thing, since it has a "natural", soft, bumpy feel, not unlike the inside of a vagina, and rubbing/bumping/thrusting against the underside of it won't cause the sponge to spill or leak, unless it's really full. I keep an old coffee mug and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in my bathroom to disinfect them. It is a bit difficult to remove -- especially if very full, it can be messy, and you do have to ... reach up there to pluck it out from your vag. But I think the benefits outweigh the inconveniences under the right circumstances, and if it weren't for menstrual cups I would definitely use sponges more often.
Sea Sponge review
I love these things! They're not quite up to my heaviest day, but for the remainder of the week, they do just fine.
I particularly love how small they are: I can keep a spare in my purse, so if I'm someplace I can't easily rinse a used one, I can exchange it for a fresh, and slip the used into a ziploc bag and back into my purse to take home. When I'm at home, I just rinse it and pop it right back. How convenient is that?
Your fingers will get messy, though, which sometimes has me wiping them with toilet paper in the stall before I brave the other women at the sinks!
Sea Sponge review
The sea sponge is a wonderful alternative to those nasty, stringy tampons. However, I recommend not trimming the sponge before use for greater, longer-lasting results. Overall, the convenience of being able to wash your sponge at work makes it a top buy in my book!
