Many of us who are disabled &/or neurodivergent find ourselves drawn to entering relationships with one another. In some ways, access intimacy in these relationships can feel more easeful, but there are times when our access needs not only differ but might even clash with one another. In addition to this, we can often struggle with internalized ableism &/or sanism in ways that impact not only our sense of selves but also our intimate relationships.

In this workshop, I will introduce examples of multiple and competing access needs, and we will explore what challenges and opportunities navigating these differences might offer. Given that our relationships do not exist in a vacuum, we will also identify how systems of power, privilege and oppression impact these experiences. Finally, we’ll discuss how to ensure that we don’t fall back on ableist &/or sanist management strategies in these potential moments of stress, but rather engage with each other from a liberatory and loving framework, if we so choose.
