Love in the Time of Trauma: Building Indispensability Culture

"The revolution eats its children." - Marat

“To return to love, to get the love we always wanted but never had, to have the love we want but are not prepared to give, we seek romantic relationships. We believe these relationships, more than any other, will rescue and redeem us. True love does have the power to redeem but only if we are ready for redemption. Love saves us only if we want to be saved.” - bell hooks

Join Kai Cheng Thom, writer, performing artist, and psychotherapist in a facilitated conversation about building relationships in queer, trans, and activist communities in the social and political context of oppression and trauma. Together, participants will discuss and work through the issues of how to address conflicts and relationship trauma created by systems of oppression, including such questions as:

How do we avoid reproducing the trauma of an oppressive world within our own movements?

How can we resolve conflicts over political differences without destroying friendships?

How do we negotiate shaming and bullying in our communities online and IRL?

How do we educate "outsiders" and new activists in way that is healing instead of shaming?

How can we balance self care and community care while capitalism forces us to choose between one and the other?

How do we centre love in our movement(s)?

How do we centre love in our movement(s)?

Participants are asked to prioritize thoughtfulness, compassion, integrity, and responsibility for their own actions in order to co-create safety and a healing space for dialogue.
